It’s been a funny old week in London. On Monday, the 2012 Olympic machinery launched the official Olympic countdown clock in Trafalgar Square in London. I’m not a huge fan of the London Olympic logo myself, and I find the shiny, angular, steel construction of the countdown clock to be quite jarring. Especially in a setting such as Trafalgar Square.

The clock was unveiled with much fanfare, to herald 500 days until the opening of the London 2012 Olympics. Last night our news bulletins told us that the clock had had to have some running repairs done to it. The visual they showed was the clock presenting 533 days to go until the opening of the Olympics. The clock had started ticking and running backwards. In the words of the Telegraph reporter, “If only this were a wind up.”
Let’s hope that isn’t any reflection of how the Games will go, although if the clock is anything to go by, I think we might have already missed them.
And, after a really busy day at work today, I blasted my mind into refreshment with a fabulous Zumba class. I haven’t been for a few weeks, so it was great to enjoy the dance and movement again. I tell you what, though: Shakira’s hips might not lie, but mine? I wouldn’t trust them for a minute.
Sunshine signing off for today!
I heard one person say the logo looks like a broken swastika! I guess you have company in not being enamored of it.
Yes, I’m sure I’m not alone, jevcat.
Clocks that go backward mess with my head in creepy ways. I don’t like the idea of seeing time slip away.
True, Renee – it just shouldn’t happen. Especially not in Trafalgar Square!
Great voice that girl’s got 🙂
Phil was there at the announcing of the Olympics. Time has just flown. I have a feeling that our Olympics will be fine on the night. But like an extravagant dinner party, we’ll be paying for it for a long time to come….
Wow – Phil was there. That must have been so exciting. I remember when SA heard that we had won the 2010 Soccer World Cup; it seemed like an eternity away and then it all happened so quickly. At least if this clock does its thing, the Olympics may well take an eternity to arrive 🙂
Yikes…that is an ugly clock to match an ugly logo…
I’m finally going to try Zumba next week…they’re doing a Zumba fundraiser at the school for Hope’s cheerleading team. I’ll have EMS on standby…
Hugs,
Wendy
I agree, Wendy. And YAY! I’m so thrilled and impressed you’re going to Zumba – can’t wait to hear all about it! It’s such fun, really. haha about EMS on standby … 🙂
I love the reporter’s “wind up” quip. So funny. Do you plan to attend the Olympics, Sunshine?
It was such a British quip, I loved it too! We’d love to go to some of the Olympics; it’s literally a lottery, so we’ll apply and we’ll see.
It’s very ugly and does bring to mind a swastika.
LOL @ hips not being trustworthy 😉
Them hips were doing their own thing, Cindy. Totally! hahaha! 🙂
Very funny that this wasn’t tested before. Haha. Wouldn’t mind a birthday calendar like that though!
Xx
That would be a good birthday calendar to have, as long as it’s not so ugly!
I agree with you on about that clock – ug-ly. You would think that with all the technology, they could figure out how to get the clock to run the right way!
Isn’t it funny that the clock didn’t work? I don’t think they will be allowed to forget about it. Ever. 🙂
Yep, that clock is out of place in Trafalgar Square, but I’m not sure it would work anywhere in London. So, will you stay in the city during the Olympics, or will you leave to avoid the crush of tourists?
We expect to be here, Todd – I’ll need to get some lessons, though, from my friend jacquelin who lived through the Atlanta Olympics. If you have any advice too, Todd, I’d be glad to hear it!
My only advice is to go on holiday and avoid the crowds. 🙂
As someone who’s lived through an Olympics in her city (Atlanta 1996), I am both excited for you and relieved it’s not me. 🙂 Seriously though, I think it’s a wonderful experience. During that Olympics the organizers asked for volunteers at the events. That’s how I got to see several tennis matches. Maybe that would be an option for you too.
You need to give me some lessons, jacquelin – what to expect, what to do, what not to do, what to avoid and what not to avoid! That’ll be so helpful! How cool that you got to volunteer and got to see some tennis! They’ve had a call for volunteers here already, and were absolutely inundated. I’ll listen out for further calls nearer the time.
I agree, Sunshine, not a terribly attractive time-piece. Sorry to have been away for so many days–international move with 2 dogs has exhausted me!
Not in Haiti Anymore 😦
Kathy
I’ve missed you over here, Kathy – hope you’re settling back into life in Kentucky.
Ugly clock, ugly logo — I agree with you 100%, Sunshine! Still, how exciting to be in London for the Olympics, with all its pageantry and competition! I’ll be watching on TV (at least some of it!), and I’ll be interested to see if they show any of the landmarks you’ve photographed!
I hope it will be exciting, Debbie! Hope my photos are good preparation for you – you’ll be old hat on London by the time the Olympics come around! 🙂
I don’t trust my hips either. Also? My bum & thighs are highly suspicious! lad you had a fun Zumba class!
Mine too, Tori! hahaha! It was so much fun.
At least the logo is erm… “interesting”. I think.
Until next time, happy “Zumba-ing” 🙂
Interesting is a good word, I think, thys!
Thanks – I’m always happy zumba-ing – as if you hadn’t noticed! 🙂
